West Coast Swing

Wer oft in der Dance Fusion unterwegs ist, hat bestimmt schonmal von West Coast Swing gehört. Sei es beim Open Day, über Werbung auf den Bildschirmen oder online bei Facebook oder Instagram. Meiner Erfahrung nach können sich die Wenigsten etwas unter diesem Tanz vorstellen. Mir ging es vor 4 Jahren noch genauso. Vielleicht kann ich das mit diesem Beitrag ändern.

Am besten starte ich am Anfang… Wo kommt der West Coast Swing überhaupt her? Wie der Name schon erahnen lässt: Von irgendeiner Westküste, nämlich der Westküste der USA – in Kalifornien, um genau zu sein. Dort hat sich der West Coast Swing in den 60er Jahren aus dem Lindy Hop entwickelt. Während verwandte Tänze wie der Charleston, Boogie-Woogie, und der weiterhin verbreitete Lindy Hop größtenteils heute noch getanzt werden wie damals, ist der West Coast Swing ständig in Bewegung.

Diese Bewegung spürt man schon in der Musik. Zwar wird auch noch häufig Blues Musik gespielt, allerdings bedienen sich DJs häufig bei allen möglichen Musikgenres und Songs, die einen 4/4 Takt bieten. Das bedeutet, dass neben dem klassischen Blues auch moderne Charts gespielt werden. Die Bandbreite ist beinahe grenzenlos. Balladen, Hip-Hop, Rap, Rock, alles ist in irgendeiner Form vertreten und wird in allen möglichen Variationen vertanzt.

Neben der Musik lässt sich diese moderne Bewegung auch in vielen anderen Aspekten des West Coast Swing spüren. Einige dieser Elemente würden auch erfahrene Tänzer überraschen. So spricht man bewusst nicht von Männer- und Frauen-Schritten. Wir sprechen von Leadern und Followern. In unseren Kursen stellen wir das unseren Schülern und Schülerinnen auch genauso vor. Wer führen will, kann gerne Leader tanzen, wer folgen möchte, kann auch das gerne lernen. Geschlecht spielt bei uns keine Rolle.

Diese Konzepte werden im West Coast Swing noch weiter getrieben. So können Follower viele Teile eines Tanzes selbst aktiv mitbestimmen und mitentscheiden. Ein Führungssignal wird hier häufig als Einladung verstanden. Dieses kann angenommen werden oder eben auch nicht. Was im ersten Moment vielleicht so wirkt, als würde der Follower die Signale nicht verstehen, werden bewusst eigene Entscheidungen getroffen und der Tanz in eine neue Richtung gelenkt. Man muss als Leader also nicht den ganzen Tanz gestalten. Es geht in erster Linie um Teamwork und die Kommunikation im Paar.

Diese Rollenfreiheit überträgt sich auch in andere Bereiche des Tanzes. So gibt es Workshops und teilweise sogar Turniere, mehr dazu unten, die sich nur mit dem Thema „Switching“ befassen. Hierbei geht es darum, mitten im Tanz die Rollen zu tauschen – möglichst flüssig und möglichst elegant versteht sich.

Wie oben genannt, ist ein weiterer Aspekt der West Coast Swing Kultur die zahlreichen Turniere. Ja, auch West Coast Swing hat Wettbewerbe! Die meisten großen internationalen Festivals veranstalten Turniere. Dabei gibt es mehrere populäre Formate. Zum einen das “Strictly”: Bei einem Strictly-Turnier meldet man sich mit festem Tanzpartner an. Die gespielte Musik ist allerdings nicht bekannt. Eine Choreografie darf nicht einstudiert werden und alle Tänze müssen improvisiert sein.

Der beliebteste Turniermodus ist allerdings das Jack&Jill. In diesem Modus meldet man sich als einzelner Teilnehmer an und wird seinen Partnern zugelost. Es kann also passieren, dass man in diesem Moment das erste Mal mit dieser Person tanzt. Es wird Raum für Spontanität und Improvisation geschaffen. Abgesehen von Preisgeldern kann man bei offiziellen Turnieren des World Swing Dance Councils auch Punkte gewinnen. Diese WSDC Punkte braucht man, um an fortgeschrittenen Workshops teilzunehmen und sich mit den besten West Coast Swing Tänzern messen zu können.

Nach 10 Jahren Erfahrung im Standard- und Lateintanz habe ich im West Coast Swing viele neue Dinge kennengelernt. Von der Technik, über die Kultur bis hin zur gesamten Tanz Community kann ich mir heute kaum noch vorstellen, mich auf irgendeine andere Weise im Paar zur Musik zu bewegen. If you’re visiting Dance Fusion often, you’ve probably heard of West Coast Swing. Be it at Open Day, via advertisements on the screens or online on Facebook or Instagram. In my experience, very few people can imagine anything about this dance. I felt the same way 4 years ago. Maybe I can change that with this post.

The best place to start is at the beginning. Where does West Coast Swing come from? As the name already suggests: From some west coast, namely the west coast of the USA -. California, to be exact. There, West Coast Swing developed from Lindy Hop in the 60s. While related dances like the Charleston, Boogie-Woogie, and Lindy Hop are mostly still danced today as they were then, West Coast Swing is constantly in motion.

This movement can already be felt in the music. Blues music is still played frequently, but DJs often use all kinds of music genres and songs that offer a 4/4 beat. This means that besides the classic blues, modern charts are also played. The range is almost infinite. Ballads, hip-hop, rap, rock, everything is represented in some form and is danced in all possible variations.

Besides the music, this modern movement can be felt in many other aspects of West Coast Swing. Some of these elements would surprise even experienced dancers. For example, we deliberately do not speak of male and female roles. We speak of leaders and followers. In our classes we introduce this to our students at the beginning of their training as well. Those who want to lead are welcome to dance leader, those who want to follow are welcome to learn that as well. Gender does not matter.

These concepts are taken even further in West Coast Swing. For example, followers can actively participate in many parts of a dance and have a say in it themselves. A lead here is often understood as an invitation. Just like any invitation, the follower can choose to accept or decline it. So, if it appears as though a follower does not understand their leader’s signals, it is more likely their conscious attempt to move the dance in a new direction. So as a leader, you don’t have to design the whole dance. It is primarily about teamwork and communication between the couple.

This freedom of role also carries over into other areas of dance. For example, there are workshops and sometimes even competitions that deal only with the topic of „switching“. This is about switching roles in the middle of the dance – as fluidly and elegantly as possible, of course.

Another aspect of the West Coast Swing culture are the numerous competitions. Most major international festivals host competitions. There are several popular formats. One is the „Strictly“: in a Strictly tournament, you sign up with a fixed dance partner. However, the music played is not known. A choreography must not be rehearsed and all dances must be improvised.

The most popular style of competition is Jack&Jill. In this mode, you register as a single participant and are assigned to your partner. So it can happen that at that moment you dance with that person for the first time. There is room for spontaneity and improvisation. Apart from prize money, you can also win points at official tournaments of the World Swing Dance Council. These WSDC points are needed to participate in advanced workshops and to compete with the best West Coast Swing dancers.

After 10 years of experience in standard and Latin dancing, I have learned many new things in West Coast Swing.
